“You are only free when you realize you belong no place–you belong every place–no place at all. The price is high. The reward is great.” ~ Maya Angelou
This quote is powerful, confusing and a paradox all at once. I read it years ago and had no idea what it really meant. I’m starting to understand. To grasp the idea of the meaning in her words.
True belonging is sharing your authentic self with the world. Belonging to yourself. Navigating the tension of being with and being alone. There are times I feel fully connected and part of something bigger than me – like in this photo. Then there are those times I feel sad, alone and disconnected from the world. Those are the times I sit still.
I remind myself of who I am; of the humanity that resides in all of us. Knowing we are all connected through a higher power that is grounded in love and compassion. Living in my wilderness – a place of solitude and searching, vulnerability, and sacredness – is a process and sometimes a struggle.
However, I have come to agree with Dr. Maya… the price is high but the reward is great.
